20 Questions: Meghan Bates, Luke Engineering

Meghan Bates is the Vice President at Luke Engineering in Wadsworth, Ohio, which specializes in anodizing and conversion coatings for the light metals of aluminum and magnesium. She has been with Luke Engineering since 2011, serving as a project manager and plant manager, before becoming vice president in 2018. Bates has a degree from Valparaiso and an MBA from Belmont University.

ATTStadiumHow did you get your start in the finishing industry? My Grandfather started Luke Engineering and I had the ability to work there during the summers in college. After gaining outside experience in other industries, I came back to work at Luke full-time in 2011. 

What does enjoy best about the industry? I enjoy all the fascinating and important projects we get to coat. I like knowing that I am contributing to our country’s military, aerospace, and defense efforts. 

Is your glass half full or half empty? Very, very full.

What three items would you take with you on a deserted island? Music, Knife, pictures of family.

What was your favorite subject in school? History.

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever eaten? Pig snout.

Do you collect anything? Memories.

Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest? Touch.

Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous? Edgar Allen Poe.

What do you do to keep fit? Boot Camp 3-4 times per week, and I eat my vegetables.

Does your family have a “motto” – spoken or unspoken? Always be kind. Disagreements will happen, but you must be kind. 

If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce? Everyone must spend a day with someone of a different ethnicity/background.

What three things do you think of the most each day? My wife, my job, and my 401K.

If you had a warning label, what would yours say? Handle With Care.

What song would you say best sums you up? Don’t Stop Believin’.

What celebrity would you like to meet at Starbucks for a cup of coffee? Oprah.

What’s the most interesting thing you can see out of your office or kitchen window? The Wadsworth City walking path.

On a scale of 1-10, how funny would you say you are? 9.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Growing sales of Luke Engineering and driving my Jeep Wrangler with the top down.

What was your first job? Cleaning golf carts at a golf course.

How many languages do you speak? 1.5; a little Spanish.

Who is the most intelligent person you know? My college roommate.

If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be? Owl.

What is one thing you will never do again? Shake a stranger’s hand.

Who knows you best? My wife. Hands down.
